Facts about Tajikistan

Tajikistan is one of the poorest countries in Eurasia with almost half of the population living below the national poverty line. Tajikistan’s turbulent transition after its independence and recurring natural disasters have contributed to widespread poverty, particularly among rural people. Access to clean and drinkable water is a challenge for many in the country. Farmers end up depending on polluted irrigation water, leading to a high incidence of waterborne diseases.

Lack of employment opportunities have forced more than one million Tajik citizens to migrate abroad to find work. Most of these individuals work in Russia, supporting families through remittances.

When poor people have access to financial services, they can earn more, build their assets, create jobs, and cushion themselves against external shocks. Since 2003, FINCA International has been helping thousands of Tajiks improve their lives. FINCA offers financial services, such as loans, savings and money transfers throughout the country.
