Resty Musoke’s inspiring journey with FINCA began in 2000 when FINCA opened a branch near her village in Uganda. At the time, Resty, a smallholder farmer, struggled to secure the capital she needed to invest in her farm. With her family’s income limited to what her farm produced and what her husband earned as a mechanic, they were barely making ends meet. Resty, in her late thirties, was responsible for supporting not just her own children but also her grandchild and several nieces and nephews after her sister passed away.
Life was challenging, but Resty had a vision for a better future. Unlike many women in her community, she had the opportunity to stay in school until middle school. That experience fueled her desire for her own children and grandchildren to have even greater educational opportunities—to finish secondary school and perhaps go beyond.
When she joined one of FINCA’s Village Banks, Resty received her first loan of 100,000 Ugandan shillings (approximately $40). While it may seem like a small amount, Resty used that initial loan, along with subsequent larger loans, to grow her farm’s income and improve her family’s quality of life.
Transforming a Farm, Transforming a Life
With the additional income from her farm, Resty was able to make meaningful changes for her family. She built a safer and cleaner home, complete with a concrete floor, proper furniture, and solar lighting. Her next goal is to install a larger water tank, which will not only serve her family’s needs but also create an opportunity to sell water to neighbours.
However, the most significant impact has been on her ability to educate her children, grandchildren, and extended family. Thanks to the profits from her farm, Resty could afford school fees, ensuring that her loved ones had the chance to achieve what she once dreamed of for herself.
As Resty puts it, “None of this would have happened without FINCA.”
