At FINCA, we believe poverty is not inevitable. But it is intractable — if it weren’t, the world would have solved it by now. Instead, despite years of development focus and investment in poverty eradication, 700 million people (8.5% of the global population) still live on less than $2.15 a day.
Meanwhile, current events around the globe are only exacerbating the forces that perpetuate poverty cycles. Macroeconomic and political instability – coupled with climate-related events like droughts, floods, and wildfires — heighten food scarcity and drive migration, compounding the difficulties people living in extreme poverty already face in securing their basic needs.
The demand for development assistance is high, and although there are plenty of well-meaning solutions out there (from FINCA and other organizations), most of them fall short of delivering tangible, scalable results that enable real people to use their own energy and intelligence to solve problems in permanent ways.
Nobody has cracked the code yet, but at FINCA we know it’s possible. That’s the driving force behind our Poverty Eradication Lab, a new initiative that reimagines how we tackle poverty through “pinpoint” innovations targeting the most persistent barriers to progress. The Lab’s purpose is not to reinvent the wheel but rather to make small tweaks to existing solutions for lasting impact.
Nudging Our Way From Stagnation to Scalable Solutions
The gap between the vast demand for effective poverty solutions and the inadequate supply persists because entrenched systematic barriers hinder transformative progress.
At the most basic level, the real-world circumstances of highly marginalized people are simply not well-studied or understood, generating a mindset that perpetuates outdated strategies and prevents breakthroughs.
Meanwhile, our current funding models are plagued by structural biases that disincentivize meaningful collaboration and favor huge shifts over measured improvements. An emphasis on claiming credit for whole solutions often takes precedence over steady, incremental success.
Add that to an NGO ecosystem that is rewarded for being “good stewards of other people’s money” — not relentless innovators for change designed to take advantage of market forces to achieve scale — and what you get is a development sector stuck in a loop of low-risk, low-impact strategies.
FINCA’s Poverty Eradication Lab will incubate and scale products and services that directly address these systemic barriers to prosperity, using “nudge” innovation to decisively push progress over the tipping point. Nudge theory posits that gentle, indirect suggestions can encourage people to make better choices and that small, incremental changes can subtly influence user behavior to improve products. Rather than chasing shiny new solutions, the Lab will look at what already exists — much of it well-designed and well-intentioned — and figure out why it’s not working and how we can nudge it toward success.
