Yet&nbsp;measuring&nbsp;women\u2019s empowerment&nbsp;remains&nbsp;a challenge.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">FINCA\u2019s&nbsp;Research and Data Science team&nbsp;is&nbsp;working to better understand how family dynamics and gender roles&nbsp;interact with&nbsp;women\u2019s financial decision-making. Drawing on our customer research studies&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/finca.org\/access-isnt-enough-embracing-the-complexity-of-wee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">on women\u2019s savings behavior in Uganda<\/a>, conducted in collaboration with the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bigd.bracu.ac.bd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BRAC Institution of Governance and Development<\/a>&nbsp;at BRAC University, we&nbsp;have found that&nbsp;standardized indicators often&nbsp;fail to&nbsp;capture the realities of women\u2019s financial lives&nbsp;\u2014&nbsp;and that locally derived measures are essential for meaningful evaluation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our latest\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/finca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Measuring-Womens-Economic-Empowerment-Brief.pdf\" type=\"attachment\" id=\"64047\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">policy\u00a0brief<\/a>\u00a0highlights our findings from this work,\u00a0where we used\u00a0rigorous statistical validation to uncover which empowerment factors truly matter. The findings challenge conventional wisdom and offer practical guidance for designing programs that strengthen both empowerment and financial outcomes.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Key results&nbsp;from&nbsp;our research&nbsp;demonstrate:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Standard metrics&nbsp;often mislead.<\/strong>&nbsp;Commonly used&nbsp;WEE indicators,&nbsp;such as&nbsp;private control over&nbsp;financial information or&nbsp;income,&nbsp;showed no&nbsp;statistical&nbsp;correlation with&nbsp;women\u2019s actual&nbsp;savings behavior&nbsp;in our study.&nbsp;Applying&nbsp;these&nbsp;standardized metrics without adaptation risks measurement error.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Local context is critical.<\/strong>&nbsp;Out of 230+&nbsp;WEE\/savings indicators&nbsp;tested&nbsp;in our study, a&nbsp;surprisingly small and highly localized&nbsp;subset performed best, including&nbsp;household financial responsibilities,&nbsp;future outlook, exposure to financial literacy training, financial strategies for old age, ability to compare various financial products, and decision-making power.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Financial coaching improves&nbsp;performance, but with varied results.&nbsp;<\/strong>Coaching helped more socially vulnerable women set meaningful goals,&nbsp;while it&nbsp;led more empowered women to make more frequent savings deposits toward their goals.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Digital financial services can open doors, but they\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0guarantee empowerment\u00a0outcomes\u00a0for\u00a0women;\u00a0program designers\u00a0must rigorously\u00a0observe\u00a0the dynamics at play. That means using metrics\u00a0that are\u00a0derived locally, grounded in the lived experiences of the women being targeted, and\u00a0proven to\u00a0demonstrate\u00a0a\u00a0robust, empirical link between\u00a0empowerment\u00a0and financial services. Without this connection, interventions\u00a0run\u00a0a high risk\u00a0of measurement error\u00a0\u2014\u00a0overlooking the\u00a0crucial\u00a0factors that truly shape women\u2019s choices and
