The History of World Population Day<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The United Nations (UN) created World Population Day in 1989 to focus attention on the urgency and importance of population issues<\/a>. Celebrated on July 11th, the UN established World Population Day to build off the interest created by “Five Billion Day.” This momentous event occurred in 1987 and celebrated the world\u2019s population reaching five billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many years and a few billion people later, issues spanning from the environment to human rights all remain affected by the world\u2019s growing population. However, one of the most prominent issues highlighted by the growing population is the inequality of women and girls. With women making up nearly 50% of the world\u2019s population<\/a>, issues like family planning, gender equality, and maternal health more important than ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Focus On Women and Population<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

World Population Day is a reminder that we can achieve a stronger future if we harness the power of every human being on the planet. It has been proven time and again that economies prosper when women and girls are empowered to receive education, work, own property, hold government positions, receive equal pay, etc. Women are critical to every economy worldwide, and when we unlock their full potential, we can push towards bettering society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
