On June 19, 2025, FINCA, in partnership with MEDA, held its third roundtable to convene international leaders and examined how investors can generate long-term future value for themselves and society through gender-lens investments that strengthen resilience, food security, and economic growth. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The future of food security and economic growth depends on shifting how capital is mobilized, not only toward immediate needs, but toward the long-term value created by smallholder farmers, the majority of whom are women. While these groups are often portrayed as recipients of aid rather than central economic actors, strong evidence attests to their role in generating income, sustaining communities, and driving local innovation. Realizing this potential requires new narratives that position farmers as investable partners and women as one of the best-performing segments in this category. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Progress also depends on rethinking the architecture of the capital stack. Traditional investment models rely on short timelines, linear returns, and narrow definitions of impact. Transformative change calls for adaptive structures that combine philanthropic, concessional, and commercial capital across stages and time horizons. A thoughtfully designed \u201cladder of returns\u201d allows funders to enter early, build confidence, and stay engaged as opportunities mature. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Collaboration across sectors is equally critical. Fragmented approaches, particularly between philanthropic and commercial funders, dilute results and hinder scale. A more coordinated ecosystem with aligned incentives and defined roles can increase both efficiency and scale. This means bringing together governments, civil society, research institutions, and private actors around a shared goal, and ensuring solutions reflect the lived experiences of the women and farmers they are meant to serve. Innovation helps to bridge the gaps. Technology, including digital financial tools, can broaden access and lower costs. Yet tools alone are not enough. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their success depends on their thoughtful design and integration into systems that include training, trust, and infrastructure. Used well, innovation connects resources to the protagonists who need them and enables cross-sector collaboration to function more effectively. Investing in women and food systems is not a niche concern or a philanthropic side project. It is a strategic response to growing instability and a powerful way to build new markets and asset classes with long-term value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0The question is not whether these investments are worth making, but how to design them for maximum impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
