{"id":43136,"date":"2021-06-29T18:50:48","date_gmt":"2021-06-29T22:50:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/staging21.finca.org\/uncategorized-en-ca\/vaccines-are-here-but-what-about-there"},"modified":"2024-11-04T02:06:31","modified_gmt":"2024-11-04T07:06:31","slug":"vaccines-are-here-but-what-about-there","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/finca.org\/en-ca\/vaccines-are-here-but-what-about-there","title":{"rendered":"Vaccines Are Here, But What About There?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Across the world, the coronavirus pandemic has forced people to adapt lives and livelihoods to a \u201cnew normal\u201d that has dragged on for much longer than anyone could have anticipated. In Canada, the recent influx of vaccines have put the country in a position that is better than most countries. Canada\u2019s vaccination numbers continue to improve, with 68 percent of the population with a first dose, and continuously declining case numbers. But, countries like <a href=\"\/locations\/africa\/democratic-republic-of-congo\">DR Congo<\/a> and <a href=\"\/locations\/latin-america\/haiti\">Haiti<\/a> are falling way behind.<\/p>\n<p>In many countries where vaccines are still limited or unavailable and the virus continues to spread, the situation remains dire. As of last week, Haiti has not administered a single vaccination. DR Congo only received their first shipment last month and remains the last country on the list of vaccination rates with just about 0.1 percent of the Congolese population having been vaccinated. With case numbers continuing the climb in Congo and the third wave bringing higher caseloads and variants of concern, the need for an immunized population is growing.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past several weeks, India has been fighting to contain a devastating second wave of the virus. Hospitals are overwhelmed and are facing a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/04\/26\/india\/india-covid-international-aid-intl-hnk\/index.html\">critical oxygen shortage<\/a>\u00a0even as the government reports record numbers of new cases. There are fears that the situation in India and other countries struggling with vaccines could spiral out of control. Low-income people in these countries are the worst affected by the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>A FINCA survey conducted in 2020 assessed the impact of the pandemic on over 10,000 clients around the world. Aside from the almost universal experience of losing income\u2013most of FINCA\u2019s clients make their living from small, informal businesses that are particularly vulnerable to any kind of disruption\u2013they were unable to adapt to the complete halt in economic activity caused by national lockdowns. Within just the first few weeks of the start of the pandemic, over\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/finca.org\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/1\/files\/2014\/02\/FINCA-Global-Covid-Survey-Report-FINAL-update.pdf\">50 percent of customers experienced food insecurity<\/a>, particularly in Latin America and Africa.<\/p>\n<p>The threat of a third and fourth wave of the virus in some places is even more worrisome given the widespread underreporting of infections combined with lack of information and hesitancy regarding the vaccine. The World Health Organization (WHO) has created the COVAX program (a combined initiative between wealthy governments and pharmaceutical companies to ensure equitable access to vaccines), which has delivered\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gavi.org\/covax-vaccine-roll-out\">69 million vaccine doses<\/a>\u00a0since February. However, several countries have already exhausted their initial vaccine shipments. They risk not receiving additional doses anytime soon as the world\u2019s largest vaccine producer, India, has halted vaccine exports while they work to get their own outbreak under control. In neighboring Pakistan, where\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/finca.org\/where-we-work\/mesa\/pakistan\">FINCA has over 1 million clients<\/a>, 37 per cent of adults indicated that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-pakistan-vaccine\/pakistans-covid-vaccine-drive-needs-antidote-to-conspiracy-theories-idUSKBN28I1B4\">they will not get vaccinated<\/a>. In all of FINCA\u2019s subsidiary countries in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/finca.org\/where-we-work\/latin-america\">Latin American and the Caribbean<\/a>\u00a0combined, less than 15 percent of the population has been vaccinated.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the early outcry of a slower roll out from some Canadians, the lack or scarcity of vaccines in many countries exemplifies the growing disparities between low- and high-income regions of the world. But, even as wealthier countries begin to slowly reopen thanks to the success of their vaccination programs, another deadlier wave of the virus is likely if many countries around the world continue to struggle with the pandemic.
