They contribute to food security, help improve nutrition in their communities and develop economies around the world. In fact,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/en\/news\/in-focus\/commission-on-the-status-of-women-2012\/facts-and-figures\">rural women make up 43% of the agricultural force<\/a>\u00a0in developing countries.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, rural women are also one of the most marginalized and impoverished groups in the world. They lack land ownership, have higher illiteracy rates and earn significantly less than their male counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>This\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/events\/ruralwomenday\">International Day of Rural Women<\/a>\u00a0(October 15), learn why these women need to be economically empowered.<\/p>\n<h2>1. Rural women do not own land<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/finca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/empower-rural-women-3.jpg\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-24096 size-full lazyload img-fluid\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" alt=\"empower_rural_women_2\" width=\"1050\" height=\"600\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-24096 size-full img-fluid\" src=\"https:\/\/finca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/empower-rural-women-3.jpg\" alt=\"empower_rural_women_2\" width=\"1050\" height=\"600\"><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p>Women account for almost half of the world\u2019s farming population but only 20% of them own the land they work on. In many families, ownership of farms is passed down to males in the family. Some women farm on communal lands or work as day laborers on larger plantations.<\/p>\n<p>In many countries, laws inhibit women from owning land. Often, even when rural women do own their own land, the land is of a poor quality that isn\u2019t arable.<\/p>\n<p>When women own the lands they farm on, they can make better decisions to grow their businesses. They also gain the power to contribute to decision making in their household and community.<\/p>\n<h2>2.\u00a0Rural women lack literacy skills<\/h2>\n<p>More than half of rural women in the developing world are illiterate. Without basic literacy skills, these women are limited from engaging in trade, skills training or accessing technological resources to grow their farms. They are also less likely to invest in modern farming advancements, such as mechanical tools.<\/p>\n<p>Outside of the agricultural sector, illiterate rural women are limited to informal and low-paying jobs, inhibiting their ability to save funds for the family.<\/p>\n<h2>3. Rural women need financial access<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/finca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/empower-rural-women-1.jpg\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-24100 size-full lazyload img-fluid\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" alt=\"empower_rural_women_3\" width=\"1050\" height=\"600\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-24100 size-full img-fluid\" src=\"https:\/\/finca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/empower-rural-women-1.jpg\" alt=\"empower_rural_women_3\" width=\"1050\" height=\"600\"><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p>A<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fincacanada.org\/our-work\/empowering-women\">\u00a0rural woman\u2019s chances of receiving credit to support her farming business are markedly lower than a man\u2019s<\/a>. Purchasing farming equipment, fertilizers and seeds can be expensive. Studies show\u00a0that if rural women had the same access to economic resources as men \u2013 such as agricultural loans \u2013 they could increase their farm outputs by 20% to 30%.<\/p>\n<p>For decades, FINCA has enabled\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fincacanada.org\/our-work\/empowering-women\">millions of women\u00a0<\/a>farmers to access the loans they need to purchase supplies and equipment for their farms. With financial help, these women have been able to grow their farming businesses, increase their yield and support their families.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fincacanada.org\/client\/it-takes-a-village\">Anarda Virginia D\u00e1vila N\u00fa\u00f1ez<\/a>\u00a0is one such woman. In a small village in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fincacanada.org\/where-we-work\/latin-america\/honduras\">Honduras<\/a>, Anarda owns about 17 acres of land, just half of which is arable. The hardscrabble farm does not yield much but Anarda is proud of what she owns and has achieved. And she is grateful to FINCA for her achievements.<\/p>\n<p>With loans from FINCA, Anarda is able to hire four people to work with her during the harvest seasons to pick the crops from her corn farm.\u00a0Each harvest yields about 4,000 pounds of corn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFINCA loans have helped me a lot,\u201d she says. \u201cI was able to help my six children get ahead and they all completed their education. Also, I have been able to buy these lands, which were formerly my father-in-law\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rural women are incredibly important.
