Her daughter and son-in-law were stricken with HIV and succumbed to the deadly virus in the same year. At 59-years old, Jane became a parent again to her four grandchildren.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy grandchildren became orphans so I took them in,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Taking care of the four children wasn\u2019t always easy. Jane would worry about keeping the young children healthy. Every day, she would cook&nbsp;meals for them using the fresh produce from her vegetable farm behind her house. Jane would spend hours bent over a traditional three-stone fire in her kitchen \u2013 a small wooden shack next to the house. The shack would get consumed with thick, black smoke that was unbearable to stand in.&nbsp;<u><\/u><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21346\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21346\" style=\"width: 1050px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/finca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/jane-cookstove-3.jpg\" class=\"wp-image-21346 size-full lazyload img-fluid\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" alt=\"jane cookstove\" width=\"1050\" height=\"600\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21346\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21346 size-full img-fluid\" src=\"https:\/\/finca.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/jane-cookstove-3.jpg\" alt=\"jane cookstove\" width=\"1050\" height=\"600\"><\/noscript> Jane Nakintu cooks a stew over a traditional three-stone fire in her kitchen.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe smoke from the wood fire would hurt my eyes,\u201d Jane says.<\/p>\n<p>These days, Jane happily prepares her flavorful meals with her clean cookstove from FINCA&#8217;s BrightLife program. With a loan from FINCA, she purchased a clean charcoal cookstove in 2017. The cookstove uses almost 60 percent less charcoal than a traditional charcoal stove and takes 50 percent less time to cook. The cookstove also reduces toxic smoke, keeping Jane&#8217;s four grandchildren safe from harmful pollution.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The new stove is very safe as there is no fire and I can use it indoors.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Today, her grandchildren eat on time as the cookstove heats up in just minutes.<\/p>\n<p>When it would rain, the grandmother didn\u2019t like leaving the house to cook in the wooden shack next door. Her new cookstove is portable so she can cook on the porch with her neighbors or inside the house with her grandchildren. Best of all, she could see what she was cooking. She plans to use her monthly savings from the household innovation to nourish her grandchildren in another way &#8211; by purchasing books they can read at
