What they need is access to capital.<\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-58e4bf02 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20)\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"padding-right:0;padding-left:0\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When FINCA began, most low-income communities were excluded from the financial system altogether. Traditional banks offered loans that were too large, too expensive, and required collateral that many people, especially women, simply did not have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--10)\">In response, FINCA&#8217;s founders \u2014 John Hatch, Bob Hatch, and Rupert Scofield \u2014 introduced a new model to bridge this gap: If individuals formed groups to collectively receive loans and guarantee repayment, they could gain access to the funds they needed to invest in their small businesses and build their financial health. And so FINCA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/finca.org\/en-ca\/village-banking\">Village Banking<\/a> was born in 1984.<br><br>What began as a radical idea quickly became a globally recognized tool to help people build their businesses, livelihoods, and communities. Since then, FINCA has expanded its operations across five continents, impacting more than 100 million people to date.<br><br>Today, FINCA\u2019s work has evolved from microlending into a <a href=\"https:\/\/finca.org\/en-ca\/our-work\">broad ecosystem of poverty eradication initiatives<\/a>.
