Highlights from 2023: Your Role in FINCA’s Impact

As we approach the holiday season, we want to look back at our accomplishments, the highlights from 2023. Throughout the year, and throughout our 40-year history, FINCA’s commitment to ending global poverty has remained strong.

This year, we prioritized supporting three main groups: smallholder farmers, families on the margin, and small business owners. As always, women’s empowerment has been essential to our mission. Our programs continued to respond to our clients’ needs, leading to improved livelihoods, better resilience, and education.

Highlights from 2023

Here are some highlights of FINCA’s work in 2023:

  • We received a $500,000 grant from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation to support the growth and quality of early childhood development education centers for refugee and host children in Uganda. The project will benefit up to 13,000 children under eight.
  • We celebrated World Savings Day with special events across our network. In Nigeria, we provided financial literacy training to children in Imo State. Students explored several financial concepts and learned the benefits of saving money. FINCA Kyrgyzstan held sixteen trainings aimed at improving financial literacy. The theme for the trainings was “When Dreams Become Opportunities.” And in the DR Congo, we showcased innovative digital solutions that allow clients to access financial services quickly and easily. Staff emphasized the importance of savings for individuals and communities, as well as the benefits of digital financial services.

  • We began working with Amazon Web Services to leverage technology in innovative ways to accelerate impact in the communities we serve. The project is improving our data gathering and analysis, leading to more effective poverty alleviation programs.
  • We made more philanthropic investments in social enterprises. Today, FINCA supports 26 companies in agriculture, education, and healthcare. Combined, our partners serve some 14 million people in 50 countries.

And, of course, FINCA continued to provide credit to hundreds of thousands of entrepreneurs around the world. These small loans changed lives for women like Aurelio Morales (pictured with her husband and daughter at the top of the article). The products that Aurelio sells in her tiny shop in the Guatemalan highlands is crucial to supporting the family. And the loan that Aurelio got thanks to support from FINCA donors helped make today’s shop a reality.

If you haven’t joined already, you too can be a part of this global movement. Before the year ends, we invite you to support of FINCA’s programs with a donation. Ending global poverty may be a monumental goal, but it’s one that’s within reach if we can expand opportunities for families in need. Together, we can make it happen.
